One more idle day in the valley, and then off I go. Only now, after having all of my close friends over for dinner and drinks with my dad, do I realize the reality of my situation.

I’m lucky, I’m blessed, I’m a lot of things. I have a lot of great things in my life—most of which will one day end in some way or another, but at the same time, I’m enjoying it all the best I can.

I’m going to take a trip. I’m going to take a trip that is amazing in some ways but meaningless in others. I’m at a point in my life where I realize that ultimately, life is what you make of it in your own story. A trip is a trip is a trip is something you never forget if you allow yourself to play into the drama of it. At the end of the day, it’s not going to matter what really happened, but instead how it all felt.

I’m going to take a trip.

Orientalism in Reporting on the Greek Euro Crisis

What’s been disgustingly prevalent and yet relatively undealt with in these economic end-times is the degree of orientalism rhetoric that is being used to characterize Greeks and the Greek government.

A BBC radio report that asked Netherlands economics students to give the Greeks advice on their economic issues actually aired a student’s comment saying the Greeks should “stop drinking tea and get to work.” And yet, this isn’t an isolated incident. All over there are reports of Greeks “not working hard enough” and having some sort of coddled Mediterranean lifestyle that leaves them unable to cope with the realities of global capitalism.

It shouldn’t surprise any of us that these pro-austerity messages are pervading the media—messages that suggest the solution to economic issues is not stimulus and welfare for real people rather than corporations, but rather ‘hard work’. If you already don’t know how ridiculous it is to impose austerity during a recession, I suggest you ask Noam Chomsky. Specifics of economic policy aside, it should be clear to anyone with a critical mind that the Greek people, although capable of good cooking/dancing/etc., have the same desires to work and make a living as others in the world.

This idea of “asiatic laziness” can be found through many states influenced by the Global North—the Russians tried to eradicate it/any other “Tartar” influence after the Bolshevik revolution. However, what’s most interesting here is the oft-forgotten fact that, in dominant Global Northern perspectives, Greece is “the orient.”

Yes, despite all those essays that get written on Ancient Greek and Roman Orientalism, it seems that the Greco-Ottoman cultural legacy has left the Greeks bunched in with the other ne’er do wells of the “Orient.”

Yet just as the British managed to stay afloat economically despite a strong penchant for tea, let us not forget that the Greeks are just as capable of the same—given they even get the education they need to produce a workforce.
